Independence Day–How Do You Celebrate this Holiday?

How do you celebrate the 4th of July?

Is it with barbecues, parties, fireworks, and parades? Consider what the second president to the United States said in how we should celebrate it:
July [4], 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations {fireworks}, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.” – John Adams

Most of us are doing well regarding parades and fireworks… but how are we doing at the most important part of how we ought to be celebrating this holiday? I encourage you all to add some “solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty” to your celebrations of our Independence Day holiday. The son of John Adams and sixth president of the United States said this when celebrating the July 4th holiday in 1837: “In the chain of human events, the birthday of the nation is indissolubly linked with the birthday of the Savior. It forms a leading event in the progress of the Gospel dispensation. The Declaration of Independence first organized the social compact on the foundation of the Redeemer’s mission on Earth [and] laid the cornerstone of human government on the first precepts of Christianity.” – John Quincy Adams, July 4, 1837

The majority of the people in a nation get the government they deserve. If they ask the Lord to supplant their natures, and so love their neighbors as themselves, they get a servant government that uses its power over life, liberty, and property to protect people from exploitation by criminals and invading armies. If the majority of the people are traders and exploiters of others, they get a government that does that to them. The US government’s nature depends on the nature of the electorate, and that’s why it’s so important that we continue to have Christian revivals every 60 years or so, as we have in the past. We need to keep praying and serving in order for our nation to have a future and a hope.
