Prepare the Way Ministries Joins PJI Lawsuit Against Gov. Kate Brown in Oregon

We would cherish your prayers as Stephen Williams is interviewed by KTVZ News Channel 21 tomorrow concerning the lawsuit that Pacific Justice Institute recently filed on behalf of Bend Community Church, Prepare the Way Ministries and churches/individuals across Oregon. The complaint, filed in Baker County, challenges Gov. Kate Brown’s recent unConstitutional executive orders.

The main point of the complaint argues that Gov. Kate Brown overstepped her authority according to the Oregon Constitution, which says that the Governor must get approval from the legislature to extend a state of emergency beyond 30 days. She did not get approval from the legislature. She extended the current state of emergency until July 6.

In addition, the complaint asserts that her actions violate churches’ rights under the Constitution to free exercise of religion. Many churches and ministries have been effectively shut down by this unConstitutional order, even though the vast majority of counties east of the Cascades have not had any cases of COVID-19. Gov. Brown’s one-size-fits-all order has been applied to the entire state, usurping power from local government officials to participate in the process and make decisions that make the most sense for their communities.

Our heart goes out to those who have been affected by the coronavirus. We seek to have a compassionate response, but we also must protect the Church’s ability to minister in this time. Many health professionals feel there are ways for churches to safely gather.

God Bless You, Stephen for stepping up to the plate on this vital issue! I have been concerned for some time with her clearly un-constitutional over-reach of authority, and even more worried that she was getting away with it. May truth triumph, and Justice be done.

Sounds like you guys are going about it in a thoughtful way. I certainly don’t see the closures in rural Oregon to be the smartest, but anywhere on I 5 her order makes sense.
