Satanist School Clubs to Begin in Oregon

The Portland, Oregon, chapter of the national Satanic Temple has succeeded in their efforts to bring an “After School Satan Club” to a local elementary school, reports the blog Godreports.

The Temple has been approved to begin their program, which focuses “on science and rational thinking,” on Oct. 19 at the school.

The After School Satan Club will promote “benevolence and empathy for everybody,” Finn Rezz, the head of the chapter, told The Oregonian.

The purpose of their club is to oppose the Good News Clubs organized by Child Evangelism Fellowship, whose purpose is to evangelize children with the Gospel and establish them in the Word of God.

According to the website of the Satanist Clubs, “It’s important that children be given an opportunity to realize that the evangelical materials now creeping into their schools are representative of but one religious opinion amongst many.

“While the Good News Clubs focus on indoctrination, instilling them with a fear of Hell and God’s wrath, After School Satan Clubs will focus on free inquiry and rationalism, the scientific basis for which we know what we know about the world around us. We prefer to give children an appreciation of the natural wonders surrounding them, not a fear of everlasting other-worldly horrors.”

Is this legal and constitutional, you might be asking?

Yes, it is.

Both secular and religious groups have the right to establish clubs for students in our public schools. The Satanic Temple has this same right since it is a recognized religious organization.

How should Christians respond to this news?

As Jesus tells us to: in love.

Remember our story from a few weeks ago about the atheist teacher who became a Christian? That happened all because some of the Christians at her school reacted to her in love and kindness, even when she was treating them badly.

God loves and offers mercy to everyone, including satanists. Of course we want to pray that students in these schools not be misled by untruth, that the teachers and administrators at these schools handle the situation properly . . . and that the satanists involved come to know the Father’s love.

But there’s no need to fear this development. Darkness and untruth are no match for light and love and truth.

God is a big boy, as Todd White likes to say, and He isn’t threatened by, or afraid of, or angry at satanists. He loves them, has compassion on them, and wants them to know the truth.

He just needs us to be His loving voice to them.
